The artist Paul Stevenson works in acrylic on canvas or hardboard in a
painterly style tending toward biomorphism. Approaching the work through
exploration and play, incorporating chance effects, painting on paper and cutting out shapes for collage; he pours, pushes,
builds up and washes away surfaces. He uses two panels in decalcomania, or the
stamped transfer of an image onto a surface, where two paint surfaces are pressed
together, each of them mutually imprinting the other. He uses the plasticity of
pictorial space, the tension of large shapes crowding the edge, the appearance of
objects floating in space, and the general look of simultaneous construction and
dissolution as methods that are analogous to a felt sense of not-yet-knowing or
curiosity. He takes inspiration from the appearance of constantly changing
relationships in the works of Cezanne, and believes that allowing that which is
left open for interpretation to complete the picture through association leaves
one with a sense of connection.

Born in 1955 in NewHaven, Connecticut and raised in upstate New York, Paul has spent time since art school working in photography studios, as a carpenter, and living as a monk.He currently works in his studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
